The City of Cape Town urges couples, families and friends to show how green their love is this Valentine’s Day by enjoying some of the City’s urban parks, cycle lanes and heritage facilities.
Cape Town is in the running to be named the world’s most loveable sustainable city. The City of Cape Town encourages residents to visit some of our special places with the ones they love, in the city they love, this Valentine’s Day as part of our commitment to building a truly inclusive city.
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) recently bestowed on Cape Town the accolade of being South Africa’s Earth Hour Capital as a reward for our efforts of travelling on the road to sustainability.
Everyone has the chance to express their support for Cape Town through the WWF’s ‘We Love Cities’ social media campaign.
‘We ask residents to embrace the natural beauty of this loveable city by enjoying a picnic in our scenic surrounds and specifically in Cape Town’s nature reserves, urban parks and heritage sites. These areas are perfect spots for couples to enjoy and for friends and families to spend quality time with each other,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic, Environmental and Spatial Planning, Councillor Garreth Bloor.
Couples and families can take the MyCiTi bus to enjoy a relaxing early evening in the Biodiversity Showcase Garden at the Green Point Urban Park which offers pristine picnic facilities, or they can cycle along the city’s cycling paths, ending off with sundowners in the park.
Residents can spread the love in the City’s heritage-rich areas, such as the Company’s Garden, Arderne Gardens in Claremont, Wynberg Park, Maynardville Park and De Waal Park.
There are several nature reserves which stretch across the city that are also perfect spots where residents can picnic and embrace the natural beauty right on the doorstep of their neighbourhoods. These areas include the Rondevlei Section at the False Bay Nature Reserve; the Durbanville Nature Reserve; and the Tygerberg Nature Reserve.
Those who prefer the ocean can visit one of Cape Town’s unspoilt beaches for a sunset picnic. One of the best-kept secrets is the Eerste Steen Beach in the City’s Blaawberg Nature Reserve or the old faithful St James Beach which is one of the smaller beaches along the False Bay coastline. The heritage-rich Muizenberg Beach has been enjoyed by generations of Capetonians coming together to express their love for the natural beauty of Cape Town.
