The Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and its conductor Brandon Phillips have joined up again with Rotary to present a fundraising concert. The gala, is in aid of the CPYO’s latest Masidlale initiative, a new project in Prestwich School in Green Point, and to enable financially challenged members of the Interact Club at Trafalgar High to attend an environmental camp at Soetwater. The Rotary Gala will take place on Sunday, May 20, at 16.30 at the Artscape Theatre.
In keeping with its aims to benefit youth, there will be three young soloists:
- Sulayman Human will perform the 1st mvt of the Chopin Piano Concerto in F minor,
- Myles Roberts will play Bizet’s Carmen Fantasy, arranged for flute by Borne, while
- Chris Njapha will perform the 1st mvt of the Elgar Cello Concerto. Also on the programme is the Festive Overture by Shostakovich.
Masidlale project in Green Point
This concert builds on the success of last year’s Rotary Centennial concert, with the accent focused on youth projects dear to the heart of both organizations.
Says Johann Gerber of Rotary: “Rotary is passionate about our young people and seeks to encourage their participation in all walks of life thereby developing future leaders in their respective fields.”
Louis Heyneman adds that this is the ideal vehicle to raise funds for the new Masidlale project in Green Point, a project which teaches strings or woodwinds at grassroots level. “Youth supporting youth is the cornerstone of our every-growing youth development and education project which transforms the lives of so many young people, harnessing talent and providing a sense of achievement amongst youngsters.”
