4th Birthday – Congratulations Zeitz MOCAA! September not only marks Zeitz MOCAA’s fourth birthday but it is also both Heritage Month and Tourism Month. Although tourism in South Africa has been hard hit by the pandemic, it is slowly opening up again with the easing of lockdown restrictions (see News Blog). This month, especially, Zeitz MOCAA hopes to welcome new and returning visitors to continue engaging with the museum, attending events and purchasing entry and membership.
“During a time of great uncertainty, now more than ever, we also need to hold on to traditions while forging ahead to build a new legacy.”
At the Zeitz MOCAA Atelier, Thania Petersen’s KASSARAM does just that. The title of Petersen’s artist residency means a “big mess, out of place or upside down” and is taken from the title of Petersen’s most recent art film, which analyses strategies used in creating and perpetuating cultural divides amongst people of colour through art – from colonialism to the present.
Visitors will be able to engage with the artist as well as have unique access and insight into her modes of production and processes, and how it relates to the concept of heritage.
- Critical discourse
On Thursday, 16 September, a panel discussion inspired by the Home is Where the Art Is exhibition will focus on the topic of “Art Resistance, Civic Engagement and the Formulation of Public Space”.
Participants will contend with questions such as who has access to what spaces and how different publics navigate outside spaces. The panellists will further discuss the many ways in which outdoor creative expression contributes to important dialogues.
- Members enjoy more
Become a member of the Zeitz MOCAA community and enjoy exclusive members-only discounts and events. At just 290 ZAR, an annual membership is only R80 more than a single entry ticket and gives you year-round access. As always, under-18s enter for free.
Zeitz MOCAA COVID-19 Protocols
While we remain open to the public throughout the current COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve put some additional processes in place to ensure your health and safety.
Under the new lockdown level 3 regulations, this includes only allowing 50% of its capacity at any one time.
On arrival, your temperature will be taken and you will be asked to sanitise regularly at the sanitisation stations throughout the museum.
Our audio guides are now also available on Soundcloud so you won’t need to share a device with anyone else, and we’ve also made it easier to pay for admission and other purchases with contactless payment options. Don’t forget: We have a strict ‘No mask, no entry’ policy.
And if you’d prefer to stay home while connecting with Zeitz MOCAA, they have plenty of online programming and activities you can join in from home. Click here for more information.
