Zeitz MOCAA this January – here are 8 Reasons to visit. “We’re not yet halfway through January but we are feeling extremely optimistic as we head into 2023 because there’s plenty to do and see at Zeitz MOCAA this month!”
1. Visit the artist’s studio
The Atelier Residency programme is a window into the world of artistic expression. Situated on level 2 of the museum, the current artist-in-residence Igshaan Adams’ residency, ‘Not Working (Working Title)’, foregrounds the people, practices and networks that are integral to his work. The Atelier is open to visitors with Igshaan and his team ready to welcome you from Sunday, 8 January through Sunday, 23 April. Please note that photography is strictly prohibited in this space.
2. Listen, look and learn
This month is your last chance to view the incredible Indigo Waves & Other Stories: Re-Navigating the Afrasian Sea and Notions of Diaspora, which runs until Sunday, 29 January. A great addition to the experience of this exhibition are our audio tours: featuring commentary from leading artists, curators, architects and designers. Explore each floor of the museum, or take a deep dive into the history of the award-winning building straight from your smartphone, laptop or tablet via Soundcloud.
3. Enjoy a meal with a view
Sunsets at the Silo never get old and now you can experience the Mother City’s majesty while you feast on the delicious meals at Ocular Lounge on level six of the museum. With views across Cape Town and her harbour, it’s a sight not to be missed!
4. Join the MOCAA family with a membership
Zeitz MOCAA members get more — including benefits such as unlimited, year-round entry; exclusive invites to Zeitz MOCAA events and programming; and discounts at the Zeitz MOCAA Shop and Gantry café. Annual memberships are R290 until 23 January, and can be purchased at the museum or online via Webtickets here.
5. Entry’s on us – Africa Wednesdays
Visit Zeitz MOCAA for FREE on Africa Wednesdays between 10 am and 1 pm — after which you are welcome to stay until closing at 6 pm! Simply present your valid South African ID or an African passport to our front desk staff and let your adventure begin! Birthday bonus: you can also get FREE entry during your birthday month on presentation of a valid ID.
6. Get creative with art for all ages
The Centre for Art Education (CFAE) bridges the gap between appreciation and understanding with workshops and classes for art lovers of all ages. This month, the CFAE’s Family Learning Workshop will provide children aged 4 to 9 and their guardians with the opportunity to learn about maps, symbolism and the technique of photomontage as they create story maps of their own. The workshop takes place on Saturday, 28 January at 10:15 am. Click here to find out more and register. If you’re a high school student in grades 9 through 11 and aged 14 to 17 years, you can apply for the 2023 MOCAA Art Club (M A C). Students from no- or low-fee schools in Cape Town are encouraged to apply for a M A C bursary. Applications close on Monday, 23 January so apply here today!
7. Reflect with 2022 Zeitz MOCAA & University of the Western Cape Fellows
To mark the completion of the inaugural Zeitz MOCAA and University of the Western Cape (UWC) Fellowship Programme, participating fellows Rory Tsapayi, MIREMBE, Motlalepula Phukubje and Monique du Plessis have conceived and organised a culminating one-day symposium. Join them on Saturday, 21 January for the gathering, titled ‘trans*missions’, which will see the fellows present different but interrelated research projects. Taking the landmark exhibition When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting as a launching point and emphasising practice-based research from a variety of departments in the museum, these projects offer a moment to reflect on the lessons of the year while projecting what is to come. Look out for the day’s full programming to be announced on our social media platforms and read more about the fellows here. Register for the ‘trans*missions’ symposium here.
8. Engage with When We See Us Webinar Series
Join Zeitz MOCAA on Tuesday, 31 January, for the latest When We See Us webinar in collaboration with the Institute for Humanities in Africa (HUMA) at the University of Cape Town. Since March 2022, this year-long parallel discursive programme has provided the theoretical framing of the When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting exhibition and will run until September 2023. This next session, titled ‘Creolisation & Syncretism: To Whom Do We Belong?’, will invite a multivocal consideration of the politics of belonging within transcultural societies across the globe. Speakers will be announced on social media and you can access the archive of previous webinars on the museum’s Youtube page here
