Design is for All – focus on sustainability

The Design is for All exhibition focuses on design creating solutions.  Dangers of paraffin stoves used indoors – the Arivi design makes them safer.

Each year shack fires affect more than 60,000 South Africans and cost the country billions of Rands. The biggest problem contributing to this is that unsafe paraffin stoves are used indoors.

Design Solution
Stoves produce indoor air pollution. Because people also use the stove to heat their home, they leave the stove on when they go to sleep. Eventually the carbon monoxide poisons them and they never wake up.
The Arivi Paraffin Stove is designed for low-income households as a safe, efficient and clean-burning answer that will avoid shack fires.

SPECS

As soon as an Arivi stove tilt, even less than 45 degrees, a shut off mechanism immediately snuffs the flame. If knocked over, it will immediately go out.
Another key element is the heat inside the stove can get up to 650 degrees. In other words if knocked over and touching any material, the heat and material can also start a fire. So the Arivi stove has a double-insulating wall that helps efficiency but also prevents that heat from causing a fire. Basically in any circumstance where the stove isn’t standing rock-still the shut-off mechanism kicks in.

AWARDS

In 2009 the Arivi Paraffin Stove was a finalist in the INDEX, Design to improve Life. The INDEX:Awards is the biggest design award in the world.
