Slash your carbon footprint by catching public transport – including MyCiTi buses – wherever possible, rather than travelling by car. The buses, which were introduced in 2011 for the launch of the first MyCiTI services, comply with Euro 4 emissions standards. Smaller buses introduced in December 2012 comply with the even stricter Euro 5 emissions standards. Special additives to the diesel fuel used in the buses also reduce emissions.
The number of cars is increasing annually, and the City of Cape Town cannot build roads for this ever-increasing volume of traffic, which has an average of just 1.9 passengers per vehicle. Cars are causing rising carbon emissions and local air pollution, as well as congestion. As a result, the City is prioritising public transport.
