Africa’s biggest kite festival, Cape Town International Kite Festival , proudly hosted by Cape Mental Health and supported by the City of Cape Town, takes place in Muizenberg on Saturday and Sunday (2 and 3 November 2013).
The theme is ‘New Horizons – Beyond 100 Years’ and it has attracted talented kite-makers and kite fliers from around the world.
‘As a caring city, we support this festival which raises awareness about the needs of people with intellectual and psychiatric disabilities. At the same time, it generates funds to help Cape Mental Health deliver mental health services where they are needed most. It also allows us to showcase Cape Town to the world,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Marketing, Councillor Grant Pascoe.
Festival-goers will see giant animals and other amazing kite creations take to the skies, as well as exciting stunt kiting, Rokakkau kite battles, and a Revolution display by Team AeroShark.
Primary school children can participate in the EduKite Competition on Saturday and local kite-makers are invited to submit an entry for the Heritage Kite Award on Sunday.
The festival offers family fun with various ‘Swaeltjie’ and sled kite-making workshops (for adults and children), craft and food stalls, as well as children’s rides and live entertainment.
All profits go to Cape Mental Health (CMH) – South Africa’s oldest mental health organisation which this year celebrates 100 years of providing vital mental health services to adults and children in poorly-resourced communities.
WHERE & WHEN: the lawns of Zandvlei Nature Reserve in Muizenberg. The event is open from 10:00 to 18:00 daily. Entry is R20 for adults and R10 for children 12 years and under.
For the first time, in celebration of the CMH centenary, there will be an exclusive night fly on Saturday 2 November 2013 (from 18:30 to 21:00). Tickets for the night fly are R100 per person including refreshments.
