Beneficiaries of this World Design Capital 2014 project are to receive keys to their beautiful Ocean View homes on Tuesday 22 April.

City of Cape Town Executive Mayor, Patricia de Lille, and the Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille, will on Tuesday 22 April 2014 hand over the keys to the first beneficiaries of the City’s innovative Ocean View Housing Project.

This project, which has been named a World Design Capital 2014 project, uses Table Mountain sandstone excavated from the site to build affordable, resource-efficient and comfortable homes for qualifying beneficiaries.

Ten hectares of rocky and close to unusable vacant land will soon boast 543 new houses, built of the very sandstone whose costly removal created a long holdup in development. The development offers attractive, comfortable and environmentally-friendly living, while their construction provides employment and skills transfer.

Furthermore, local people have been trained in the art of stonemasonry work, which makes this a truly exceptional project based on strong partnerships with the community.

WHERE: Construction site, off Slangkop Road into Jupiter Road, Ocean View, Cape Town

WHEN: Tuesday 22 April 2014 at 11:00 to 12:30

The theme for WDC 2014 is ‘Live Design. Transform Life’. As the winning city, Cape Town will plan, develop and promote a programme of events to run throughout 2014 focusing on using design as a development tool.
