Visions of Nature @Irma Stern

Visions of Nature is a group show by four etchers who have been working together in the Simon’s Town Art Group studio for many years. This is the first time they exhibit together a the Irma stern Museum.

Although the group work closely together and learn from each other, each artist uses different etching techniques to express themselves in a unique way.

Ursula Niblett-Zeller is inspired by nature and natural structures. Like nature itself her pictures evolve, changing in format and content. She effectively combines traditional etching techniques with interesting experimental processes. She often collages her etchings in combination with paintings on canvas.

Christine Scheid’s works are printed using deeply bitten plates that often fall apart as her experimental process develops. This results into her fairly realistic figures and/ landscapes becoming strong abstract works. In her work she wants to show that “nature around her is beautiful, fragile and easy to destroy by man.”

Marelise Van Wyk’s print are characterised by strong expressive line that emphasises the contrasts in the strength, yet delicacy of nature. She uses traditional copper plates as well as dry-point on Perspex and plates that she picks up on the beach, to print with. Her etchings are often printed on textured pre-prepared mixed-media surfaces.

Margie Taswell-Yates does small, detailed work based on her observation of the landscape before her, the effect of the elements on man-made structures, and the feeling of isolation that can be produced by the lack of nature in cities.  Being primarily a painter she loves aquatint and uses it in most of her etchings for both its tonal and mood-making qualities.

They are all inspired by nature and drawn to the exciting element of surprise in the experimental process used in their etching.
