Ten young classical musicians will honour Madiba’s Legacy and commemorate 20 years of Democracy at the 43rd Youth Music Festival on Saturday 23 August 2014 at 19.30 in the Artscape Theatre.
The evening celebrates the ongoing achievements by a representative group of participants who are making great strides in the music world.
Since its inception this annual event has served as a launching pad for accomplished classical music instrumentalists and singers in playing with a symphony orchestra. The festival is presented by Artscape and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO), conducted by Brandon Phillips, in collaboration with the Distell Foundation.
In programme order the soloists are: Carla van der Merwe (23) Clarinet, Siyabulela Ntlale (29) Baritone, Goitsemang Lehobye (26) Soprano, Aristide du Plessis (25) Cello, Eben Wagenstroom (22) Piano, Dylan Tabisher (26) Marimba, Jeffrey Armstrong (17) Violin, Makudupanyane Senaoana (21) Baritone, Myles Roberts (22) Flute and Roelof Temmingh (17) Piano.
Comprising of works by Mozart, Johann Strauss II, Dvorak, Peter Klatzow, Saint-Saëns, Rossini, Hendrik Hofmeyr and Grieg, the varied and exciting programme is conducted by Brandon Phillips who has received international accolades as the artistic director and conductor of the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. He is also a principal bassoonist with the CPO.
Marlene le Roux, Director of Artscape Audience Development and Education says: “Each year musicians of outstanding quality have auditioned to perform at the festivals. This year there were no auditions. A panel selected this group of exceptional musicians to represent and honour the many musicians who have previously performed at the festivals and at Artscape’s National Music Competitions. Many of our soloists have made it on the concert stages of the world and we therefore acknowledge the teachers and music institutions for their dedication, inspiration and the very high standard of teaching in the Western Cape.
Much of the biggest repertoire and most exciting to listen to and perform is in the concerto field (instrument with orchestra) and opera field (voice and orchestra). The dream for many is a reality as they perform at this festival accompanied by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.”
