Outside In, is Clare Menk’s latest solo exhibition and first with Erdmann Contemporary. Menck introduces a new palette of scenes painted at dusk and dawn – strongly referencing change.
Known for her originality, Menck’s use of strong and bold colour is effective in the new paintings and signals a maturity in her work.
“I cannot paint these summer scenes when I am freezing in my studio in the platteland. I want to paint wintery scenes; it warms up my mood. I want to take walk at dusk and dawn and feel the cold on my skin; I need to paint what I feel. I will come back to my swimmers in summer.”
Last year, Clare Menck was the only South African artist included in an international group exhibition in Germany which solely focused on female nude self-portraits. Two of her paintings from that exhibition were acquired for a German museum collection.
In South Africa, Menck needs no introduction; she has long been appreciated for her painterly and colourist skills in relatively small paintings of figures in nature and interiors. Autobiographical in content, her paintings are of people that the artist has known closely, and of her experiences accumulated through travel.
Outside In is a collection of new work, presented alongside select examples of her earlier paintings.
