With over 7000 visitors during its short run at the Cape Town Stadium, and popular demand, the MAKE IT NEW exhibition of Cape craft and design has been given a second run in a new home at the new V&A Waterfront Watershed.

Presented by the Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI) and sponsored by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sports (DCAS) and Cape Town Design NPC, the initial five-day exhibition at the Cape Town Stadium proved a huge hit with Capetonians and visitors to the city, and the exhibition will now be situated at the Watershed from r30 October until 7 Decembe (10h00 until 19h00).

“The turnout to view the exhibition in just five days was unprecedented in our experience and we received great feedback and many requests that it have a longer run so those who missed it can see it; and those who saw it to go back for more,” said Erica Elk, Executive Director of the CCDI.

MAKE IT NEW was part of a flagship project of World Design Capital (WDC) Cape Town 2014 titled Makers + Thinkers .

“The Watershed at the V&A, as the new hub in Cape Town of local craft and design, is the ideal space for it. We anticipate many return visitors, and that many thousands more Capetonians and people from all over the world visiting our city will be able to see it in the coming five weeks,” added Elk. “We are very grateful to the V&A management for helping us achieve this, with such a short turnaround time.”

The exhibition will continue to be free to the public.

The exhibition is a striking timeline of the Cape’s rich craft and design heritage. More than 160 local craft producers and designers have added their contemporary flair to historical inspiration. When reopened, MAKE IT NEW will also include some as yet unseen pieces from several participating producers.
MAKE IT NEW has received excellent feedback:

“I enjoyed it very much. Beautifully displayed. Some wonderful colour combinations. Work looked fresh”, said House & Leisure magazine editor Naomi Larkin.

100% Design South Africa organiser’s Laurence Brick and Cathy O’Clery had this to say: “We can hardly take it all in. Love the range and diversity of products, the inclusivity, styling and layout. Everything!”

Elle Deco noted: “You know that feeling when you just need to treat yourself to a little something special. This is it. Book yourself off for at least two hours. The all-new MAK E IT NEW exhibition, presented by the CCDI, is something special. DECO would like to congratulate the CCDI and the very capable team of curators, stylists, anthropologists, historians and of course, crafters and designers, who have worked to put this exhibition together. It is really something extraordinary and an event to make the Cape Town creative community proud.”
