Premiere: Award-Winning Nicola Elliot’s RUN

The Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA) presents ‘Run!’ choreographed by Nicola Elliott, winner of the 2014 Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Dance, from Wednesday, February 11th to Saturday, February 14th at 8pm.

With a simmering undercurrent of feminist politics, meticulous performance crafting and bold visual statements, ‘Run!’ subverts the notion of women as (only) soft and fragile and, in both a concrete and abstract way, engages the complex relationship between the female performer and the space and place of the stage.

The unconventional and thought provoking ‘Run!’ premieres in Cape Town after a successful season at the National Arts Festival in 2013 where it received much attention.

Gayle Edmunds writing for the City Press describes it as “a piece of dance theatre that requires brain engagement and active interpretation……it is energetic, the dancers are incredible athletes, the accompanying music is masterfully executed – but the movement isn’t easy…Elliott’s choreography goes so far as to question the movement constraints she is using to question the societal constraints.”

‘Run!’ was nominated for two KykNet Fiesta Awards for Dance in the Best Choreography and Best Original Score categories for 2013.

The cast includes Jori Snell, Thalia Laric, Adriana Jamisse, Ciara Barron and Julia de Rosenwerth, and features pianist Mareli Stolp performing a commissioned score by Braam du Toit.

The opening night performance on February 11th will be followed by a panel discussion including the choreographer, members of the cast, and chaired by researcher Alan Parker.
