Mandla Mlangeni’s TRC to perform in the yard

Fresh from astounding performances  at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, the Johannesburg based trumpeter Mandla Mlangeni leads his Tune and Rcreation Committee (TRC) for yet another outstanding performance at the Jazz in the Native Yards on Sunday 19 July in Guga S’thebe Cultural Centre, Langa from 2pm.

Raised in Soweto  Mlangeni is a young vibrant graduate of music composition from the University of Cape Town. Currently writing and performing his music with his various bands, The Tune and Recreation Committee (TRC), the Native Groove Collective (NGC) and the newly established Amandla Freedom Ensemble.

Forming part of the TRC this Sunday is Yonela Mnana (piano), Peter Ndlala (bass) and Claude Cozens (drums).

Besides being a bandleader and composer Mlangeni performs regularly as a freelance musician in various capacities. As well as leading the TRC in numerous other projects in Norway, Sweden, Germany, Israel, Britain and Botswana where he performed a wide variety of music ranging from Classical, Jazz, Pop and Indigenous African Music.

He has performed with many celebrated musicians including Barney Rachabane, Marcus Wyatt, John Davies, Hugh Masekela, Sipho Hotstix Mabuse, Susana Baca (Peru), Mark Fransman, Louis Moholo , Dizu Plaatjies, Khaya Mahlangu just to name a few.

He describes the sound of TRC as “Mesmeric harmonic movements, hypnotizing vamps, miniature tone poems and minor-key melodic riffs. Basically, cool jazz for a new school”.
