This is, without doubt, Cape Town’s favourite walk, and the whole city comes out to Sea Point to stretch its legs, take in the sunset, smell the sea air and walk dogs.
VoiceMap starts at a landmark visited by Charles Darwin in 1836, meander past six beaches, a hundred year old swimming pool, a good few public artworks of varying artistic merit, a National Key Point, and a tidal pool with a dodgy reputation. There are plenty of interesting characters to see along the way – and no hills, not even small ones.
This voice-guided walk will take a little over an hour, and we’ll end off with a drink at a nearby bar-cafe.
VoiceMap Audio Walk
VoiceMap uses your smartphone’s GPS device to play audio at specific locations. After downloading the audio walk using the instructions below, just put in your headphones and start walking.
To download the walk in the Android or iPhone apps, follow these steps:
1) Install VoiceMap by going to bit.ly/voicemap (iPhone) or bit.ly/getvoicemap (Android)
2) Sign in or create an account
3) Select Cape Town from the list of cities
4) Then select “Sea Point Promenade”
5) Tap on the red download button. The audio walk costs R11.99. You can pay using your iTunes and Google Wallet accounts. Allow ALL the files to finish downloading before you close the app.
6) When the download is finished, the download button will change from red to green, and instead of seeing the price, you’ll see the word “Start”. You’re ready to go!
The route starts at the Sea Point Contact, on the promenade. This is in the the North East corner of the Bantry Bay parking lot on Beach Road, near the corner of Alexandra Road, 100m west of Bantry Bay traffic circle, and not far west of the Bantry Bay Suites listed as this event’s location.
