Cape Town, as a unique destination, has been shaped by different people, groups and cultural influences. The crafting traditions from before the era of mass production could still carry a distinctive legacy into the future, inspiring the city’s rich handmade sector, as well as interior and lifestyle design.
Are there traces of our past in contemporary Cape handmade objects?
Rayda Becker and Jane Solomon are the presenters at the November CCDI Creative Exchange, and will use images from the CCDI’s hugely-successful 2014 Make it New exhibition to illustrate how objects from the past have influenced and inspired contemporary Cape handcrafted objects. And then Henrique Wilding will pick up the story with a look at how to combine locally designed and handmade objects into contemporary interiors.
Rayda Becker trained as an art historian at the University of the Witwatersrand and UNISA. After a few years of teaching, she shifted careers to work as a curator, initially at the Wits University Art Galleries, then Parliament and now at Groote Schuur, the house that Rhodes renovated. She has curated many exhibitions; from Fine Art and African Art, to those that deal with craft.
Jane Solomon is a designer and workshop facilitator. Her work includes the design of artmaking processes, learning materials and textiles (Fabricnation) and the facilitation of community-based workshops where creativity is used as a tool for both personal growth and income generation.
Professional photographer/stylist, Henrique Wilding has worked for a wide range of local and international magazines for the past 18 years. Proficient in travel, food and leisure photography, her particular interest lies in décor shoots. She contributes to regular features such as solutions for House & Leisure magazine, and Trends for SA Garden and Home. She is skilled at identifying trends in international style and interior décor.
