Sea Point joins the colour-in books trend

Three young local artists have created a special colour-in book, White Curtains, for residents and visitors to Sea Point

In the last year book shops are reporting on an increasing interest and sales of colour-in books for adults. This is a global trend, reaching a peak in time for Christmas. According to The Independent, putting pen and paint to paper, satisfies artistic ambitions and offers escapist relaxation and therapy.

The new book ‘White Curtains’ is Sea Point’s first colour-in book for all ages. The product is now exclusively sold at Checkers Sea Point.

It is an original and local art, as opposed to most of the colouring books on the shelves – that are imported. The White Curtains book consists of 26 pages filled with illustrations of Sea Point scapes – Promenade, Lion’s Head, Main Road and the public pool.

The illustrations were created by local artist Frank Lunar while working in a book shop in Sea Point. The pages feature ‘My White Curtain’ poem by Nokulunga Zindo.

Why ‘White Curtains’? The concept of the book was suggested by curator Valerie Geselev. She noticed during a stay at Sea Point that the curtains in all the apartment blocks are white. Valerie got curious about this custom and asked artists to explore the reason for it. Frank took on the challenge and created a colour-in book which invites people to paint the curtains in any colour.

The book was presented first in August at an exhibition in Adelphi Centre and a Q&A at Sea Point library. Now Checkers got interested in the unique product of art, and are selling it in the Sea Point store. ‘We are happy to see support for local art,” said Frank and Valerie, “this is an opportunity for site-specific artwork to reach the public in an affordable manner, outside of galleries or museums’.
