We focus on the WASTE section at the interactive Smart Living Challenge Zone at the Two Oceans Aquarium.
The Smart Living Challenge Zone, the new interactive zone at the Two Oceans Aquarium, is an exciting initiative to educate children and adults alike on making smarter choices to preserve and protect the environment.
Four digital interactive installations address the themes of energy, water, waste and biodiversity. Today we focus on Waste.
Cape Town generates thousands of tons of waste in a year – paper, plastic, metals, grass cuttings, tyres, medicines, food – all these things have to be thrown away. How we get rid of waste is vitally important and the City plays a leading role. A lot of what is thrown away can be re-used or recycled. Simply burying waste in landfills is not the only answer – it can be expensive and potentially damage the environment. You can make a difference, by separating your waste for re-use or recycling which reduces the amount of material that has to be thrown away in landfills.
Recycling begins with you not everything you throw away is Rubbish!
It begins with you: All over the world, people are recycling their household rubbish. Working with waste. It begins with you.
REDUCE. RE-USE. RECYCLE AND DON’T LITTER.

Kitchen waste in your wheelie bin!
Nearly half of the waste generated in your kitchen is compostable. Kitchen waste is organic waste that will decompose into nutrients and roughage, which are very good for the soil in your garden.
ILLEGAL DUMPING WILL COST YOU…
…A LIBRARY.
…A PARK.
…A CLINIC.
The City of Cape Town spends nearly R350 million every year clearing away rubbish from illegal dumping spots ranging from empty land to sewers and blocked toilets. That’s money taken away from the development of things like libraries, clinics and parks in Cape Town.
So help the City by report illegal dumping and littering.
