An exhibition of botanical art at the UCT Irma Stern Museum, titled, Wild Harvest: nectar, berries, capsules and seeds, curated by Mary van Blommestein, celebrates the bounty of the season of autumn.
Arranged in association with the SANBI Herbarium in Pretoria and members of the Botanical Artists’ Association of Southern Africa (BAASA), who have created new work specially for this show.
The contemporary work is available for sale. In addition to paintings recording the life cycle and showing the development stages of our indigenous flora, there is a small component featuring birds by Kenneth Newman. These watercolours have been generously made available by members of the Newman family.
Highlights regarding the botanical loans are the selection of plates from the publication, Wild Flowers of the Transvaal by Cythna Letty, the first resident botanical artist at what is now known as SANBI (SA National Biodiversity Institute) in Pretoria, as well as work by one of her successors, internationally renowned, Gillian Condy, who has contributed illustrations to Geophytic Pelargoniums and Grass Aloes of the South African Veld.
Wild Harvest Programme of Events
A supplementary programme of events has been arranged to promote appreciation of our rich natural heritage and encourage participation in its conservation.
- There will be a pop up tearoom walkabouts offered on Wednesdays from 10.30am-12.30pm.
- Each Saturday morning there will be an art workshop.
- Discover the hidden maths of our flora with a drawing class presented by Elbe Joubert on Sat 23 June.
