Cape Town is throwing open the doors to libraries and local community centres to keep children occupied during their winter break with a creative Holiday Programme to keep the blues at bay.
- The Recreation and Parks Department has a diverse range of both indoor and outdoor activities on offer at its hubs – from board games and sport, to dancing and face-painting.
- The usual selection of books and audio-visual materials on offer at Cape Town libraries, children can enjoy puppet shows, arts and crafts and talent shows.
‘It can be a challenge to keep the young ones busy for a few weeks during the school holidays, especially during winter when it’s cold and they can’t get outside to play. The City’s facilities offer winter programmes that ensure there is something for everyone, from younger children to teenagers. No one has to be bored this winter school holiday,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security; and Social Services, Alderman JP Smith.

‘The list of activities to keep young minds busy is exhaustive. I want to encourage parents to send their children to these programmes to not only keep them safe and busy, but also give them the opportunity to socialise and learn. They can have some good old-fashioned fun in a safe and inclusive space. Holidays can also be expensive and all of the programmes at our libraries and recreation hubs are free of charge.
‘The variety of programmes that we offer, and the fact that they run across the city, are part of our efforts to get as many children involved as possible and helps to foster community cohesion,’ said Alderman Smith.
The extensive list of programmes is in line with the priorities of the City’s Organisational Development and Transformation Plan to create an inclusive city.
