UCT Irma Stern Museum presents a World War I centenary poetry and musical tribute that will be held at the on Sat 10 Nov at 11am.
The programme is an hour in length and has two components being both a poetry and musical tribute to commemorate the centenary of WWI.
The poet and academic, Brian Walter, will focus on the Mendi, drawing on a selection of poems from his collection of the same name published together with works by Cathal Lagan and Basil Somhlahlo. In addition, he will read well- known and some lesser known work by poets including Wilfred Owen and Isaac Rosenberg.
John Woodland will give a brief survey of some of the important 20th century composers who have responded to WWI using recorded music by Aaron Copland and George Butterworth, as well as an extract from the Requiem Mass, sung to the tune of Sir Edward Elgar’s Nimrod.
