Gallery South – Gallery, Museum and The Space @South
Gallery South is a gallery and museum space dedicated to South African critical contemporary engagement with South African art, its history and significance, and relationship to Africa, its diaspora, and broader movements.
With a small but impactful permanent collection, it offers local and foreign visitors a quick overview of some of the highlights of South African art history, and its connection to our politics, spirituality and aesthetics, over the better part of a century. Researchers will, by arrangement, also be able to use our library, with its focus on South Africa literature, poetry, art and history.
Located in the heritage building at the entrance to Muizenberg, at 19 Atlantic Road, Gallery South was designed in 1902 by the highly acclaimed Dutch architect Johannes Egbertus Vixseboxse (ten years after he was part of the winning team that designed the Natural History Museum, now the South African Museum). Claudia Braude has spent the last two years lovingly renovating the house. Visitors today are immediately struck by the warmth and happiness emanating from the oak floors, high ceilings and original fire place, combined with state-of-the-art hanging systems and lighting.
The Space @South is a stunning new venue attached to Gallery South. Painted white throughout, with a white epoxy floor, it offers an almost futuristic contrast to Gallery South. Depending on the function, The Space either flows out from the Gallery or is differentiated from it.
While not yet formally open to the public, behind the doors Gallery South and The Space @South are alive and happening.
Visitors who have already responded enthusiastically include David Koloane himself; Elza Miles, preeminent art historian; Jill Trappler, artist and Greatmore Studios stalwart; Tumelo Mosaka, the director of the Cape Town Art Fair; Helen Sebidi, Johannesburg artist who is currently having a show at the Norval Art Foundation; Ruarc Peffers, Director, Aspire Art Auctions; Michaela Limberis Curatorial Assistant, Zeitz MOCCA; Christopher Till, Director, Javett Art Centre, Pretoria; and many local artists including Tyrone Appollis, Madoda Fani, Anthony Cawood and others.
