IS Art Gallery opens two exciting exhibitions during Art Franschhoek month. The exhibition of still life studies by Louise Jennings and Jeannie Kinsler is entitled ‘things’. Etienne de Kock is exhibiting sculptures, with the focus on motion and mobility.
You are invited to the opening of both shows on Saturday 17 November 2018 at 11h00.
‘things’ – our other selves, drawing on memory, treasured objects transmissible serendipitous moments, admired and nurtured our world.
‘Their paintings sing soft songs to each other in different dialects,’ says fellow artist, Immie Mostert, who will open their show. Both these artists have exhibited widely in South Africa.
Mobile sculpture is the main focus of Etienne de Kock.
‘I believe that moving sculptures have the ability to hold the viewers’ attention over time. Random movement has the effect on human nature that it causes the viewer to attempt to predict the unpredictable, This enhanced connection between viewer and work my primary objective.’
“I am attempting to make objects of beauty and contemplation, and also to build forms that are capable of unpredictability. Movement is compelling. People are drawn to unpredictable movement. My sculptures move, often manipulated by the viewer, and in this way, both movement and random human intervention become employed as “material” in the work”.

Artists Info
Jeannie Kinsler was born in England but moved to this continent when she was 8 years old, growing up in Zimbabwe and then moving to South Africa in 1979. She studied Graphic Design at the then Natal Technikon. She lives in Durban and works from her studio on the Berea where she has been painting for the past 12 years. Her early study of painting in oils was under the guidance of Pascale Chandler.
Louise Jennings: Born in Durban in 1970. Studied Horticulture and Fine Art at Technicon Natal from 1989 – 1992. I was a student of Pascale Chandler’s Painting Class from 1989 – 1995. In 2000 I started to paint full time. In 2009 I started studying part time at University of KwaZulu Natal where I completed my Honours (cum laude) in Ceramics in 2014.
Etienne de Kock: Born 26 June 1961 he completed his BA Fine Art (Sculpture and Graphics) University of Pretoria in 1986.
Etienne has broad knowledge and deep understanding of the materials that he uses, which are chosen for their robustness as well as their aesthetic value.
Various materials are incorporated into mobile sculptures. These are chosen for their robustness as well as aesthetic value. Etienne’s work includes wrought iron, bronze, copper and brass work, various hardwoods and even stone.
The fascination of motion, combined with the form and texture of the finely worked juxtaposed materials is what give these sculptures their uniqueness
