The Franschhoek Literary Festival (FLF) 2019 brings together a broad cross-section of mostly South African writers and a few popular international authors. Inspiring, delighting, informing and challenging audiences.
Raising funds for local community and school libraries and training and placing assistant school librarians, through the FLF Library Fund is also a key objective.
The Festival runs from Friday to Sunday 17 to 19 May, preceded by the Book Week for Young Readers.
The events take place in a variety of village venues within a few minutes’ walk of each other, creating a vibrant ambience in streets buzzing with book-lovers.
The overriding theme of the 2019 festival is one of hopelessness vs hope; of a nation (perhaps even world) that has had enough of destruction, deception and greed.

The following events have a strong environmental/wildlife theme
25 Why the world needs dung beetles (Hospice Hall):Through the eras of alchemy and religion, to the days of science, the dung beetle has been a symbol of life and renewal. Authors Helen Lunn and Marcus Byrne (The Dance of the Dung Beetles) share the wonders of these charming – and seemingly charmed – little creatures with Don Pinnock.
67 Wild thoughts (Congregational Church): When we think of stories, we think of people, but animals have their own tales to tell. Marcus Byrne, Helen Lunn and Francoise Malby-Anthony (An Elephant in My Kitchen) speak for the animals with Karabo Kgoleng.
82 Our only world (NG Church): Tamara LePine-Williams raises the question we’re all asking: what is our collective responsibility in halting the desecration of planet Earth? with Duncan Brown (Wilder Lives – Humans and our Environments).
103 Going wild (Old School Hall): Climate change is destroying Earth as we know it. What can we do to change that? Duncan Brown explores how we can un-tame ourselves to stop the degradation of our home, with Lorraine Sithole.
