Rentia Retief’s first solo exhibtion in Cape Town at EBONY/CURATED draws on her continued investigation into the landscape and the constant reminder that we are just brief, insignificant visitors.
Her lyrical works on paper, created ‘en plein air’ in the mountains, with the elements contributing to the mark making, entices the viewer to relive the experience of being alone in nature. By creating these drawings, often on a very large scale, she endeavors to capture a lost emotion and to draw herself closer to a natural world that is quickly disappearing.
“The process of drawing my surroundings became a ritual of my awareness of my separation to nature, a dance of mortality set to the rhythm of the constants of life” – Rentia Retief 2019
Retief graduated with a BA in Fine Arts and an Honours in Illustration, both at the University of Stellenbosch in 2016. She has been awarded The George Paul Canitz Fine Art Prize and the University of Stellenbosch Public Art Award.
WHAT, WHEN & WHERE: ‘Die Berg is Geduldig’ runs from 6th June 2019 to 27th July 2019 at EBONY/CURATED, 67 Loop Street, Cape Town, 8001.
