A4 Arts Foundation is proud to present Ikhono Lasenatali, a collaborative project with Sir Professor Muholi that brings together the work of twenty-five emerging talents from KwaZulu-Natal in a celebration of youth, skill, possibility and the imaginary.
The project is curated by Dr. Bajabulile La Dhlamini Sidzumo and Thobeka Bhengu, members of the Muholi team, and is the second instance of the initiative. The first iteration opened in KZN this May 2019.
For almost two decades, artist and activist Sir Professor Muholi has used the camera and a global network of art institutions to address the social ills associated with the politics of race, gender, and sexuality faced by South Africans and others globally.
For Ikhono LaseNatali, Muholi aims to use their platform to redirect the international attention they receive to the practice of others: twenty-five young artists from KwaZulu-Natal have been commissioned by Muholi to reinterpret an image from their photographic series Somnyama Ngonyama: “…using their own mediums, speaking their own truth, or sketching what they saw and thought was right.”
A4 Arts Foundation laboratory for the arts
A4 Arts Foundation is a free to public not-for-profit laboratory for the arts.
It collaborates with artists to develop ambitious projects, nurture exchange and dialogue, broaden access and work towards a sustainable inclusive arts ecosystem. Ikhono LaseNatali brings these forces together in an integrated initiative about community, visibility and self-determined artistic practice.
In addition to the exhibition, the project entails a wide-reaching exchange with schools in the Western Cape to expose, engage and challenge youth to consider the tenets of inclusivity, creativity and collectivism.
