Two exhibitions, Eris Silke – The Party Next Door and Parent and Child, are running simultaneously at MOK Gallery. The gallery space dates from 1685. It was Ansela, a young slave woman that was married to Laurens Campher (see full history) who lived in this house. The walls are still the original bricks.
- Eris Silke – The Party Next Door
In room 3(the bedroom of the original house) Eris Silke is having a solo exhibition with 18 of her works.
Eris Silke was born in Hungary and grew up in Israel. She’s a self-taught artist, and has been painting since the age of five. She obtained a psychology degree from Witswaterstrand University (Johannesburg), and then moved to Cape Town. She has been practicing as a professional artist for forty years.
“It’s never been easy to meaningfully connect with people. My paintings are my way of expressing myself. Expressing the ‘real’ me.”
Silke has had over 30 solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions in South Africa, mainly with Die Kunskamer Gallery, Cape Town, directed by the late art dealer, Louis Shachat. Other galleries in Cape Town include: The Association For Visual Arts (AVA), Casa Labia Art Gallery, Burr & Muir Antiques & Art & The Irma Stern Museum. In Johannesburg, Silke has exhibited The Goodman Gallery, The Everard Read Gallery, as well as Graham Britz’s Fine Arts Gallery.
“My inner landscape is often dark and inaccessible to those less introverted than myself. Still, I can not deny myself to compromise on the level of my inner authenticity – in regard to my Art.”
- Parent and Child
In room one (The old chicken coup) and two (the original living room) is a Parent and child exhibition that shows artworks by prominent South African artists and their child who is making a career in art.
Here you will see work by Clare Menck and her daughter Frauke Louw (Frauke’s father is the well known artist Johann Louw), Sandra Hanekom and her son ,21year old Simon Bouwer, Gretha Quinlan, who is the child of Appie van Wyk and Elise Bodley, with her son Ronan Quinlan, Marie Stander and her son Lukas Stander, Jaco Sieberhagen and his daughter Madeleine van Wyk and the Hennie Meyer and his son Daniël Meyer.
MOK Gallery
The gallery was started 5 years ago by Cecile Blevi.
‘I was looking for a space that would be accessible to tourists. South Africa has incredibly talented artists who need exposure and the value of the ZAR makes it a very attractive acquisition. Muratie is a wonderful destination with no pretensions, lots of heritage and natural beauty. I approach artists that inspire me to exhibit their work. Even though it is a small gallery, I try my best to make it a place to be proud of for me and the artists that I work with.’
Enjoy a wonderful outing to the Muratie Wine Estate and take in two excellent exhibitions, in a truly unique and atmospheric environment at MOK Gallery.
