A4 Arts Gallery has lots to offer if you choose to visit after dark on First Thursday – or during the day Tuesday to Saturday. Extended opening hours First Thursday 9 April 5.30PM–8PM.
Here’s what happening right now.
- Papertrails
Curators francis burger and Jonah Sack invite Lavendhri Arumugam, Sophie Cope and Dan Tucker to share their respective practices in Papertrails’ working studio, after hours and after dark.
Papertrails is an interactive exhibition, creative library and studio that engages a selection of books, pamphlets, and other print-and-paper matter published in South Africa from the 1950s to the present.
- mode(l)@Goods
In the April edition of Goods, the assistant curator Nkhensani Mkhari shares the curatorial process towards the forthcoming exhibition mode(l). Using Goods as a first base for research, they invite work from Gio Rech, Thelma Ndebele, Kyle Morland, Meghan Ho-Tong, and Bonolo Kavula that includes architectural plans, miniatures, texts, maps, diagrams, and unresolved artwork.
Goods is a project space for work in process and thinking aloud. Creative practitioners are invited to rapid prototype exhibition-making through monthly offerings.
- ‘About’ A4
Entrance Wall – Official opening 5:30PM–8PM 9 April
Having spent time wading through our archive of projects both past and on the go, listening to the A4 team, and letting them meander while marking coordinates, artist Bella Knemeyer has distilled A4’s work on the entrance wall.
Mitchell Gilbert Messina animated the wall into video
- A4 Gallery
Sean O’Toole continues to add to his research library in this browsable exhibition, the first to focus on the South African photobook. New additions to the chronological timeline include a copy of Jo Ractliffe’s Being There (2022), only recently published.
