Finding Refuge is an impressive retrospective of the work of Ruth Carneson, that takes you on a journey from the time she left with her activist parents fleeing South Africa. Ruth gives us insights about the exhibition in this week’s edition of the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio.
Listen to the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm every Friday at 16h10
As Ruth Carneson tells us, she left South Africa, clutching her teddy bear in one hand and a roll of her drawings in the other. In the UK, she struggled to reconstruct a life fractured by fear, but found much-needed refuge in artmaking. Her creativity helped her deal with the trauma of growing up in apartheid South Africa, where her parents had been harassed and imprisoned. In 1991, it was possible for Ruth to return home to South Africa.
This exhibition is extensive and Ruth gives credit to curator Ulrich Wolff, who has created the narrative that takes you through this large body of work in a multiplicity of media.
You will definitely be “Finding Ruth” as she takes you through work that starts with early drawings she sent to her mother in prison and ends with her most recent work done during lockdown. The picture above is a detail from one of these recent artworks.
