Sun-Set@Baxter, concerts return as the festive period rolls in, with BCUC kicking off the sizzling line-up of local artists at the Baxter Theatre Centre!
The end of 2021 saw the introduction of the Sun-Set@Baxter concerts in the, then, newly renovated garden as an ideal family friendly, outdoor entertainment experience after an extended period of restrictions. The garden was the perfect setting for a safe and unique musical experience.
This time around, on 27 November 2022, the hit-making band from Soweto, BCUC headlines the show with hits such as “Nobody Knows” and “Yinde”. BCUC, Bantu Continua Ubuntu Consciousness, a seven-piece band, describes their sound as “indigenous funk, hip-hop consciousness and punk rock energy”. They have toured extensively both locally and globally, entertaining audiences with their high energy performances.
Founded in 2017, BCUC has used its original sound to share their controversial yet interesting views on modern Africa, of its rich traditions, rituals, and beliefs to tackle the harsh realities of those at the bottom of society. “We bring fun and emo-indigenous Afro psychedelic fire from the hood,” says vocalist Kgomotso Mokone.
Opening for BCUC is Cape Town based, electronica folk band, Diamond Thug. Newcomers to the music scene, this independent act from Kommetjie, continues to pursue authentic and honest sound which has earned the band various honours in international competitions such as Culture Collide’s pick to perform at #SXSW2017, as well as the Converse’s Music Global Takeover.
In 2018, Diamond Thug released their 12-track debut album “Apastron” which featured as Apple Music’s New Artist Spotlight, an accolade much revered in the South African music industry. They have also received significant playlisting on Spotify, gathering over 3 million streams on the album. In May of the same year the band released ‘Gaiafy’, an EP dealing with themes of mental health and other issues important to them. The EP found international support on Apple Music and Spotify, with features on Indie Shuffle.
The new Sun-Set@Baxter season, will see fresh South African talent on the programme. It’s the perfect summer experience for the entire family to enjoy.
