The guest author this month is Athambile Masola, Co – Compiler of NONI JABAVU – A Stranger at Home
Helen Nontando (Noni) Jabavu (1919-2008) was first African woman to pursue a successful literary career, the first black South African woman to publish autobiography, lived abroad much of her life, Noni also specialised in ’personalised journalism’.
This compilation of her columns written for the Daily Dispatch in 1977, is a revealing glimpse into her extraordinary life.
About the Compilers
Athambile Masola (pictured above) is a writer, researcher, poet and teacher at UCT. Her PhD from Rhodes University on black women’s historiography and life writing focused on Noni Jabavu and Sisonke Msimang. A Mandela-Rhodes Scholar (2010) based in Cape Town.
Makhosazana Xaba is an anthologist, essayist, short story writer and poet. Published numerous pieces on Noni Jabavu including two tributes following her death. She is a researcher at the Centre for Race, Gender and Class at the University of Johannesburg, based in Johannesburg.
