Cape Review (Black & White) – Group Exhibition at The Cape Gallery

Appreciate this exhibition in all its diversity

Cape Review (Black & White) a Group Exhibition will be opened by Gabriel Clarke Brown, Publisher S A Art Times, at The Cape Gallery on Sunday 28 May at 4pm.

Change is a constant force in SA. The lie of the land and the lives of the people living in it have shaped the intent and narratives of the artists participating in this exhibition.

Many of the artists included are printmakers. Traditionally, prints and drawings were the entry level for an art collector, but this could change. According to a report on March 23rd, 2023, in the Wall Street Journal, Katsushika Hokusai’s iconic 1830-1832 ‘Great Wave’ woodblock print set a record selling at 2.8 million at Christie’s in New York.

Today we can suspend criticism and, while memories of current events and recent history are fresh, we can enjoy the shared experience of living in South Africa and an opportunity to appreciate the content of this exhibition in all its diversity.

Drawing, like handwriting is personal. An artist’s ability to draw shape, edge, shadow, and the relationship one form to another as seen, and to convey their perception of these on a sheet of paper in a manner that is instantly relatable is admirable. Drawings reveal as much about the artist as the subject of their choice.
