Red Art Gallery gets ready to party with art, music, wine and food lined up for First Thursdays on 6 July – and owner Dave Endean paints the picture of what to expect.
Listen to the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm every Friday at 17h30
Dave tells how First Thursdays has evolved from an art walk around the galleried in town, to restaurants and bars in the area joining in and helping to create a buzz in the city. Red Art Gallery has responded by adding wine, food and music to fit in with the party vibe.
In June they had the Adamo Trio playing in the gallery. They will be coming back this Thursday. So, get ready to be treated to well known saxophonist Buddy Wells, with singer and guitarist Adamu da Silva, plus their drummer. They’ll definitely be hitting the high notes!
What to expect on the walls at 76 Wale Street? Dave tells us how, after 20 years in Tokai, post COVID, they moved into town, where they’ve been for two and a half years. And they have found that people have moved from collecting smaller paintings and going for BIG, bright and bold contemporary pieces. They also have sculpture that seems to attract and appeal to young buyers as well.
Although the focus that evening is definitely on the social scene, works are certainly sold. And often, people come back the following day to re-look a piece that attracted them and make a final decision to buy.
So, lots to enjoy at the Red Art Gallery. And Dave says he should have mentioned that they serve a great coffee too! See you there…
