Driaan Claassen explains Mapping the Mind at THK

Driaan Claassen, in this Arts Round Up, takes on on a journey of self discovery through his exhibition Complex Systems [Mapping the Mind] at THK Gallery. And the good news is that you can join him on Saturday 22 July at 11:00 as he Maps HIS Way.

Talking about being overwhelmed by ‘Complex Systems’, Driaan takes us through his intention of finding the individual within the larger landscape. He needed to start with a process of finding himself – his psychological and internal landscape – to find personal healing. The exhibition is about finding the map to guide other people through this process. It’s “complex” rather than complicated, as we should be looking at the whole system and not just the parts.

The need to use different materials is to access different parts of self. For example, wood is warm, while bronze tends to intimidate. The medium influences how we engage with the work – different ways to invite people in.

We learn about copper growth crystals, which Driaan has been experimenting with over the past 8 years. The process that results in these highly polished nodules that tempts one to reach out and touch.

Essentially, Complex Systems [Mapping the Mind], needs to be seen to understand the relationships that develops between viewer and object.
