Treasure chest of African inspired ceramics and textiles

Ardmore Newlands – Phillipa Greene on the Salam Arts Round Up – introduces us to this new treasure chest of African inspired ceramics and textiles that has opened in Newlands Village.

Listen to the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm on Fridays at 17h30

Phillipa tells us of her long association with Fee Halstead, the founder of Ardmore, having gone to school with her daughter. She joined Ardmore and became Head of Sales. She decided that Ardmore needed to be put on the map in Cape Town witha flagship gallery to showcase for their extensive and distinctive product range.

She describes Ardmore Newlands as a “wonderland” of wall paper, prints, ceramics and textiles. The ceramics were the initial focus some 35 years ago when Fee started mentoring a small group of women in the then Natal Highlands including Bonnie Ntshalintshali, who won the Standard Bank Young Artist Award, jointly with Fee.

Today, there are between 70 to 80 artists working at Ardmore producing their creative and distinctive designer range of products inspired by the design ethos of their ceramics. There are fabrics that include linen and silk, with tactility being a feature.

The Ardmore range has been accepted into the global  market as an international African luxury brand. They are collaborating with international concerns, such as Hermes.

And next week Ardmore will be launching a new range of placemats, table mats, runners, and cushions which are distinctively South African – the photo above feature the new range of cushions with a zebra design theme.

So, hurry along to  see what’s new at Ardmore in Newlands Village, with the Barnard Gallery and Sarah Walter as neighbours!
