Oliver explains the title Chaos Lilies, which relates to printings he began working on during the chaos we were living through at the time of the COVID pandemic. These works on exhibition are intended to reflect how he has moved forward, and the work has a particular edge, They reflect his mindset in the current traumatic state and “our position as queer artists”. He wanted to work with other artists whose values he shares.

He paints from life and he invited other artists into his studio  and these people became his anchors. The his painting  The Hypochondriac (Self Portrait with Lilies), the lilies were a sort of joke to anchor him in that space.

Oliver Scarlin, Chaos Lilies

Although the male figure is his main focus, he started his career with still life works, which he found easy to sell. His move into ceramics started when he decided to make plates for himself and his partner. for their home. As his 30th birthday present to himself, he began a ceramics class and his ceramics moved into creating domestic altar pieces, which became part of his practice. And this progressed into the figurative sculptures on the exhibition.

There certainly is an edge to the work in Chaos Lilies, which makes a visit to Ebony/Curated Cape Town worth a visit. This collection of portraits anstill lives, this exhibition captures true moments of connection found in an increasingly fragmented world.

At Ebony/Curated Franschhoek – Bordeaux St Gallery – Stanislaw Trzebinski’s  Exogenis is set to explore the interplay between the microscopic and the cosmic, inviting viewers to reconsider their place in the universe while bringing curiosity to the interconnected mysteries within. So, you can move from this set of mysteries back to the mysteries that Oliver Scarlin sharply evokes in Chaos Lilies at Ebony/Curated Cape Town.
