Karel Nel walks us through ‘Homecoming’, the fabulous tribute to photographer Norman Seeff, famous for his globally-recognised celebrity images taken over the course of his long career in the United States. The photo above is of Andy Warhol titled ‘Eyes’.

Who is Norman Seeff? Curator, Karel Nel, gives us the background to Seeff, a South African, who studied medicine in Johannesburg and worked in emergency in Soweto hospitals for 3 years. He moved to New York and then Los Angeles, and it was in the USA that he started out as a street photographer. He became a graphic designer at Columbia Records, designing their record covers. He took the photographs of the best known celebrities of the time including the Rolling Stones, Ray Charles, Cher, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Andy Warhol – an amazing array.
It was a journey of discovery for Karel, led by South African photographer Gavin Furlonger. who provided access to the works and to Norman Seeff. With Gavin Furlonger as Co-Curator, they developed ‘Homecoming’.
The decision was not to set up a museum-style exhibition. You walk into large murals applied directly to the walls You walk into a rock concert! There is also a projection of Norman Seeff in conversation with the celebrities he photographed.
NORVAL ROCKS! Homecoming is definitely an engaging exhibition that you need to see.
And the good news is that Karel Nel and Gavin Furlonger will be doing a walkabout at 10:00 on Saturday 21 September. If you don’t make it, contact the Norval Foundation and check when Karel will be conducting tours of Homecoming and the other exhibitions currently on view.
