Anne Scott, Managing Director of the One & Only Hotel, and Dirk Dunez, of Art@Africa, explain how they combined forces to reach out with South African art and craft to visitors to Cape Town.

Listen to the Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm on Fridays at 17h30

Dirk explains that he and Anne met when they were selected to be judges at the WESGRO Best of Wine Tourism Awards. Anne is a specialist in accommodation and his is art. They found that they shared similar interests and that there were good reasons for working together. Anne refers to the values they shared – the quality of the environment and their love for South African nature and also for promoting South African arts and crafts,

Art@Africa, One & Only,Anne sees that many of their guests at the One & Only have a passion and interest for art and a passion for conservation. She was anticipating an installation of ‘wall art’ and was delighted that Dirk actually was filling the dedicated gallery space with a melange of sculpture and 3-D pieces creating a hub of art and craft. The feedback of hotel guests has been very positive. She is also delighted by the response of the hotel staff who are enriched by the gallery space, which has enriched the hotel.

Dirk points out that the One & Only supports the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation‘s rehabilitation of turtles programme – something  that  Art@Africa is also involved with. Anne notes that some of the sculptures celebrate turtles and their interaction with human beings, So it creates a strong ,message for the Foundation and Two Oceans Aquarium, . The Art@Africa has promoted a Save the Seas exhibition and working with the V&A Waterfront’s Recycling Department they are recycling waste plastic to to be able to create plastic sculptures.

You can see this focus on conservation at both the Art@Africa Gallery at The Cloctower Centre or at the nearby new satellite gallery at the One & Only Hotel. Both spaces always will promote NATURE, CONSERVATION and ART!

Currently, the exhibition at the Art@Africa is titled Ready, Steady Grow! featuring the works of Kobus Walker, which are a celebration of natural diversity in our beautiful country.
