Karel van der Vyver, the founder of the Museum of Dogs in Cape Town, and the only one in the world, leads us through this special space, and tells us what we can expect to find and how it all came about.
Listen to the Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio FMR 101.3fm on Fridays at 17h30
The Museum of Dogs, located at 95 Keerom Street, is in a 17th century historical cottage, which was renovated in the early 2000’s for the restaurant ’95 on Keerom. The addition of the upper floor provides beautiful views of Table Mountain. and a place to relax with a good cup of coffee. The ground floor retains its original historic features.
The museum has been open for 6 months. January was a busy month with 2 concerts and brandy tasting event as well.
Karel explains that the relationship of his aunt with her dogs was inspiring. She died of cancer and her dogs had remained a source of support to her at that time. He too grew up with dogs, and people’s relationship with dogs was important
He wanted to create a place to celebrate the human connection with dogs and how dogs can change people’s lives.
Currently there is a photography exhibition by DJ Shelwell, a ceramic exhibition by Tania Babb, sculptures by Mervyn Dragsund and Carol Slabolepszy ,
- The black and white photo exhibition by DJ Shelwell (see photo with Karel above) encourages people to spend time in nature with their dogs.
- Tania Babb exhibits large scale busts of dog – and some cats.
- Mervyn Dragsund from Durban shows geometric, interior design sculptures of dogs
- Carol Slabolepszy has resin life size dogs dogs on exhibition.
- Upstairs you will. find personal stories of dogs, from all over the world, of how dogs have changed their lives.
