Figure of 8 Dance Theatre’s annual company season runs from 3 – 6 September at Magnet Theatre, and this year, you are invited to take your seat at the table for The Reservation — a bold, immersive dance theatre production that holds a mirror to social habits and hungers. This family friendly performance is sure to awaken your appetite!
Set in the fast-paced world of a bustling urban restaurant, plates and politics collide as we serve up an à la carte of movement and meaning. It’s a space where strangers meet, lovers quarrel, and families reunite, while waiters waltz between realities — a place where the customer is always right… en die chef is altyd bedonnerd. It’s a paradise for influencers, where selfies flash and dishes glisten.
- Every plate holds a memory. Every exit leaves a trace. Make your reservation.
The Reservation is co-directed by multi-award-winning theatre maker Buhle Ngaba and Figure of 8 Dance Theatre co-founder Grant van Ster. The script was developed through a workshop period, reflecting a true merging of genres and integration of dance and text.
Shaun Oelf has become known for his sensitive sound design and to help conjure the perfect restaurant atmosphere, lighting designer Nell van der Merwe brings her exceptional ability to translate a director’s vision to the stage. The production pushes performers beyond movement alone, integrating scripted dialogue to challenge the misconception that dancers are limited to physical expression.
2025 has already been a vibrant year for Figure of 8 Dance Theatre and their Performance Development Programme. Recent productions include Maze of the Mind at Suidoosterfees, Wings of Light (in collaboration with Cape Town City Ballet), and Dance Synergy. Most recently, the company performed at the District Six Museum’s book launch of The Boy Who Loved to Dance, which honoured Johaar Mosaval’s journey, and at the 20th anniversary of the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival, performing alongside internationally acclaimed violinist Daniel Rowland and the Faculty.
In addition to their upcoming season at Magnet Theatre, appearances at both Momentum Aardklop and the Stellenbosch Woordfees are also on the horizon.
