Submarine Museum SAS Assegaai

A distinguished submarine of the South African Navy, faced a bleak fate: decommissioning and impending disposal for scrap metal. However, a group of passionate individuals refused to let history disappear. They envisioned a future where the Assegaai could inspire generations through preservation as a museum! Their unwavering dedication paid off, and the old submarine was granted a second life, but the journey wasn’t all smooth sailing. Challenges arose including, funding hurdles and the need for a permanent home. Yet, the team behind the project persevered. Today, managed by the Naval Heritage Trust, her remarkable story continues. The transformation is now complete, and she proudly rests in her new home in Simon’s Town, a proud part of the Naval Museum. The Museum doors are open to the public, unlocking the secrets of the deep and igniting a passion for science, technology, and South Africa’s remarkable maritime heritage. Open seven days a week from 09h30 to 15h30 with the exception of Good Friday, Christmas Day (25 Dec), Day of Goodwill (26 Dec) and New Year’s Day (1 Jan).
