Music: Arno Carstens

For one of South Africa’s most successful rock musicians, Arno Carstens’s career has been strangely plagued by setbacks.

A decade ago his first band, Springbok Nude Girls, imploded on the cusp of making it internationally. Then, despite winning several South African Music Awards as a solo artist, he suddenly found that local radio stations wouldn’t playlist his songs for being too “adult contemporary”. Fortunately, on his new album, Atari Gala, Carstens has stopped trying to pander to any overblown commercial expectations and has returned to doing what he likes best: crafting heartfelt, rousing alt-pop-rock songs out of the ashes of fear, doubt and failure. Join him at the Old Mutual Summer Sunset Concert series this weekend.
