For Earth Hour 2013, the City will switch off lights in its buildings, on Table Mountain and with the V&A Waterfront host an unplugged Cape Philharmonic Orchestra event.

The City of Cape Town will once again show its support for Earth Hour this year when, on Saturday 23 March 2013, millions of people around the world switch off their lights from 20:30 to 21:30 (local time).

For Earth Hour this year, the City will switch off the lights in its own buildings and on Table Mountain – which will be one of the many iconic landmarks around the world to be featured during Earth Hour. The City will also be purchasing a Green Electricity Certificate for the lighting of the mountain while the lights are on.

The City is also partnering with the V&A Waterfront to host an event featuring the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, to promote saving electricity, reducing carbon emissions and living lightly on the planet. Cape Talk presenter, Africa Melane, will be MC for the evening. The audience is encouraged to be seated by 20:00 for the run-up to Earth Hour. At 20:30 the lights on the mountain will be switched off as well as all non–essential lights at the V&A Waterfront and the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra will play unplugged. The audience will be given candles to hold during the orchestra’s performance.

During the event, Consol Solar Jars will be used to light up the City of Cape Town’s Electricity Saving logo. The Solar Jars will be on sale after the event.

“The City looks forward to supporting WWF’s Earth Hour 2013 and wholeheartedly supports the positive message it conveys. The City is committed to becoming an energy efficient, low carbon and environmentally responsible city and encourages residents to join us in taking action towards this goal,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic, Environmental and Spatial Planning, Councillor Garreth Bloor.

This year’s event promises to be an exciting collaboration and a memorable way to spend Earth Hour, with millions of people around the globe doing the same.

Earth Hour serves to highlight the City’s commitment to a comprehensive and integrated Energy and Climate Action Plan, outlined in the Moving Mountains report, which is being put into practice by way of 11 objectives, with targets and detailed implementation plans involving 40 programmes and more than 120 projects. The City’s Electricity Saving Campaign is one such project. To download the Moving Mountains report, please click.
