Taste Explosion this weekend!

It’s that time of the year again: when all the Capetonian foodies assemble to celebrate some of the finest chow that this city has to offer, reports Stacey Kriger.

The 6th annual Pick n Pay Taste of Cape Town festival is currently being held at the Green Point Cricket Club and, after checking it out yesterday, I seriously recommend sneaking this gem into your weekend plans (if it isn’t there already!).

The festival is impeccably set out with a comprehensive selection of top restaurants, award-winning wineries and liquor labels, and various innovative food producers and exhibitors. Tickets are R80 (purchase online or phone +27 (0) 861 000 291) and includes a tasting glass.

Once inside, festival-goers who wish to purchase food or drinks must exchange money (cash or card) for “Crowns”, the official currency for Taste. Crowns are sold in packs of 20, where each Crown is worth R5, and each dish costs between 4 and 8 Crowns. Keep in mind that change is offered in Crowns only, so you might want to be strategic with your choices to avoid being left with a few useless crowns at the end of the day.

Portion sizes are somewhat on the small side, but the flavours are truly superb. And once you take into account the stunning food presentation and general enthusiasm of the chefs and cooks, the tasters are worth every cent. After trying a number of dishes, I think my favourite was a delicious Lemon Verbena Cured Trout from the La Colombe Pop-Up Restaurant, but there really is an awesome selection that includes something to satisfy any palate.

The festival runs until Sunday, 14 April, and any additional information can be found here
