Visit an urban agriculture and environmental action association operating in the socio-economically neglected townships of Khayelitsha, Nyanga and surrounding areas in the Cape Flats and be inspired.
Abalimi Bezekhaya means “Farmers of Home.” It began as a project in 1982 of the Catholic Welfare Bureau to help people survive during the apartheid era, but nothing more than basic survival. Post apartheid Abalimi was able to start working with people who now had rights, and then community group gardens and associations became a possibility.
‘I have purchased the book “How To Start A Garden With Only A Few Cents” on the tour, and with the guidance from my Grandmother and this book I will be planting this garden back at home in the States this upcoming spring season’ reports Melinda, Cape Town Green Map intern, who visited Abilimi. To purchase the book send an email to info@abalimi.org.za with your request.
