Cultural Entrepreneurship – economic exploitation of culture or the preservation of culture through innovation? is the topic at the AFAI debate at the District Six Homecoming Centre.
‘As long as I am painting, I am an artist, when finished I am an entrepreneur.’ (Lawrence Alma-Tadema)
‘A cultural entrepreneur is the character who is entrepreneurial in the realisation of cultural values…’ (Klamer, 2011)
What does it mean to be a cultural entrepreneur?
Being business savvy within the designated field of arts and culture or the practice of an entirely different model of entrepreneurship for socially good ends? How is the tension between artistic or cultural motivation and entrepreneurial motivation balanced? Can artistic or entrepreneurial ambition be at odds with social development and social enterprise?
Is there anything particularly different in the practice of Cultural Entrepreneurship in Africa?
Join AFAI (African Arts Institute) to explore these questions through a public debate and experimental performance by a group of Cultural Entrepreneurs from across Africa on Tuesday 28 July at the District Six Museum’s Homecoming Centre from 17:30 to 21:00.
AFAI’s business manager Belisa Rodrigues will chair the discussion, and engage with a panel of four Cultural Entrepreneurs from four different African countries. Each of the panellists will share their views and positions on the definition of this new field of practice, based on their diverse professional experiences and cultural backgrounds.
