An African Penguin Waddle at the V&A Waterfront takes place tomorrow, Saturday 14 October, and Heather Wares of the Two Oceans Aquarium updates us about the urgency of raising awareness of the plight of the penguins on the Sanlam Arts Round Up.

Heather explains that the African Penguin Waddle is part of the Two Ocean Aquarium’s “NOT ON OUR WATCH” campaign initiated in March 2023. To ensure their survival, the African penguin needs public support to ensure that it receives the needed policies and protections to avoid extinction.
Without raising awareness and taking action, it could be 12 years before their extinction.
African Penguin Awareness Day on 16 October is part of an international campaign to raise awareness and with Cape Town leading the way. And that’s why the invite is to the Two Oceans Aquarium community to join the “waddle” around the V&A Waterfront to show support and generate awareness. This waddle will be one of many taking place around the world , all with a common cause in support of the precious African penguin.
Heather also suggests that clubs and schools do their own thing and show their support. Dress up in black and white, display key words and help get the message across.
So Cape Town – show your support and get out there and make sure our voices are heard!!
- Come prepared: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Remember to bring water (in reusable water bottles) and some snacks for fuel in reusable bags – please, no plastic.
- Prizes: Plenty of spot prizes for attendees (as well as the “best-dressed” waddler)
