Alexander Upstairs Theatre might be under construction, but the show goes on! The Good News Cabaret with Roland Perold and Godfrey Johnson opens this Thursday, Lara Frances on Saturday and Medusa Incarnate opens next Monday.
If the construction work on the theatre floor is finished on time the shows will be taking place upstairs. Should it be delayed our contingency plan is for the shows to take place downstairs in the main bar area.
The GOOD NEWS Cabaret
Johnson and Perold reunite to present a feast of comedy & music in their new cabaret.
Both play and sing the piano simultaneously with wow-factor dexterity. Together they bring tantalizing comedy songs to life with custom musical arrangements. Pieces that are funny, witty, strange & unusual in some way are featured alongside original material by the duo who are both songwriters.
Modern men? Oh yes they are! But classics like Your Song, Lady is a Tramp, Piccola Marina (and some of that crap from Phantom) also get a new twist.
The Indelible Godfrey Johnson has performed over 20 one-man shows nationally and internationally. Has worked extensively as a musician, director, composer and is a starlwart on the cabaret scene. Johnson has been nominated for 6 Fleur du Cap awards, most recenlty for “Vaslav”, and won for Best Performance in a Cabaret for Kissed by Brel.
Debonair Roland Perold is a consummate performer, producer, songwriter and cabaret artist with 9 years’ experience across Revue, Cabaret, Plays, Musicals and Pantomime. Specializing in Golden Age repertoire has grown a loyal following as Cabaret Man and won The Muse Award for Best New Play for “The Pitch” (co-written with Callum Tilbury) by the Writers’ Guild of South Africa.

Lara Frances
For Lara Frances, recording her new album was an exercise in musical honesty and vulnerability. On her latest release, “Relinquish” the talented singer/songwriter lays herself bare with a stripped down collection of songs that put her emotions front and centre.
With vivid lyrics and raw instrumentation layered over beautiful melodies, the new songs are captivating, atmospheric soundscapes with gentle hints of folk, rock and country. Based around the theme of letting go, “Relinquish” displays an artist whose sound has evolved and matured into something unmistakably honest and hauntingly beautiful.

Medusa Incarnate
She’s a bad bitch with snakes for hair and a glance that turns men to stone, but literally only gets two lines in most mythology textbooks. Basically, her Wikipedia needs a serious update.
Winner of the Standard Bank Ovation Award at the 2018 National Arts Festival, Medusa Incarnate is a contemporary retelling of the Greek Medusa myth. Except, Medusa’s dead now and (spoiler alert!) so are you. Don’t panic – Medusa’s got you covered. From her pink plastic paradise, she’ll guide you through Hades. Turns out the underworld is more of a party than anyone expected, and actually, hell is just never getting to take off your heels. But like, ever.
“An irreverent, bubbly and contemporary Medusa retells Greek mythology in a highly relatable, eccentric and humorous way. A fun quirky one-woman show” – Nita Coetzee (The Herald)
“Former Athenian priestess turned Gorgon, Medusa, tells her epic life story from her point of view in this witty, tongue-in-cheek tale from Greek mythology. Cleverly narrated and performed by writer and artist Kate Pinchuck, the story of the monstrous woman with venomous snakes for hair […] has a few extra twists and turns” – Devon Koen (The Herald)
“Kate Pinchuck wowed, stunned, shocked and entertained in her one-woman show Medusa Incarnate. Pinchuck served us Medusa like we’ve never seen her before. She gave such a powerful performance that to say she was “charismatic” would be an understatement. […] If you’ve ever wondered about Medusa or her story, or if you’re simply a lover of Greek mythology then this show is a definite must-see. And if you’re not one for the Greeks then see it anyway and you might just change your mind.” – Toby Ngomane (Cue Media)
WHAT: Medusa Incarnate directed by Dara Beth | Written and Performed by Kate Pinchuck | Sound Design by Joshua Biggs | Choreography by Mlondiwethu Dubazane | Stage Managed by Masali Baduza | Presented by Kate Pinchuck in collaboration with The Furies | Duration: 50mins.
