Alexanders Upstairs Theatre: December highlights

by | Dec 9, 2014 | News | 0 comments

There’s lots to look forward to at Alexanders UpstairsĀ Theatre this month!

Anthology: A Change in the Weather – a collection of short plays
By Candice D’Arcy, Louis Viljoen, Nicholas Spagnoletti | Featuring Adrian Collins, Amy Wilson and Brendon Daniels | Directed by Louis Viljoen, Megan Furniss & Candice D’Arcy
Duration: 70mins
Three writers, three actors, an anthology of three short plays on the theme ‘A Change in the Weather’.
Candice D’Arcy’s Fundamental looks at what life in the not-too-distant-future could be like, if the lines between politics and religion are no longer drawn.
In Nicholas Spagnoletti’s Drowned Bride, a best man and a bride find themselves at the bottom of the Atlantic, dead, after the wedding went horribly wrong.
And there’s Louis Viljoen’s Tropicalypse: Some hangovers feel like the end of the world; some hangovers are the end of the world.

The writers were given the theme, and aside from constraints on cast-size and set, total freedom. Brilliant acting talents Adrian Collins, Amy Wilson and Brendon Daniels are up for the challenge that Anthology presents.

Duration: 60mins
About The Late Night XXXmas Boylesque Show
ā€œBoyLesqueā€ is a tongue in cheek variety show, which pays tribute to early 20th century American style burlesque comedy and striptease performances, but with a twist – this revue has a distinct South African flavour. It is a fun journey through a variety of genres and styles of performance from comedy, cabaret, ballet and drag, voguing and of course, the art of strip tease.
The show stars three times Naledi award winner singer, actor, choreographer, dancer and TV personality Sibu Radebe (best known for his portrayal of the iconic character of Vusi on e TV soapie ā€œBackstageā€, as well as his many appearances in musicals like ā€œChicagoā€ and ā€œBeauty and the Beastā€).

The show was conceived by cult film – maker Stanimir Stoykov ( “Doobee Boobies”). This version of the show is a collaboration between Joburg and Cape Town based performers.

ā€œBoylesqueā€ began its first run at the Foxwood Theatre in February 2013 and has been running in several venues like the Sandton Theatre on the Square, POPart Theatre in the Maboneng Precinct, Cantare at Monte Casino, Casta Diva in Pretoria and the Alexander Bar Upstairs Theatre in Cape Town.
Most recently Boylesque created the successful “Late Night Boylesque Show” which featured an entirely new cast.

Exhibit S: Ode to Saartjie Baartman by a Black South African Woman – Performance Art
Performed by Thola Antamu
Duration: 30mins (there will be a Q & A session following this in the theatre)
Exhibit-S, ‘Ode to Saartjie Baartman by a black South African woman’ is a poetic performance piece inspired by misrepresentation, art and the story of a young woman. Born exactly 200 years before Thola Antamu in 1789, Saartjie Baartman was a khoikhoi woman from the Eastern Cape.

“She lived to be only 24 , after a life of seemingly never-ending struggle and lies. Like me she was also orphaned as a child. She wasĀ  bought as a showpiece by an Englishman and smuggled to England never to set foot onĀ  her home soil again. She was supposedly well treated, paid, housed and respected by her ‘owners.’

Thola Amatu

Thola Amatu

“This is her story fused withĀ  mine and told through, speech, skin, and movement.”- Thola Antamu
Thola Antamu is a professional dancer, singer and actress specialising in poetry and movement as a mode of creating exhibitionist theatre. After graduating from The Cape Academy of Performing Arts, Antamu subsequently travelled internationally and was comissioned to create and perform her piece “My Confessions” at JW3 in London. She also trained and performed with the Artful Badger immersive theatre company in “Flood” at London’s feted The Vaults Festival. In her powerful new solo production, “Exhibit S, Ode to Saartjie Baartman by a Black South African Woman”, Antamu uses a culmination of her extensive training and techniques, South African history, everyday news, femininity and blackness to evoke pertinent conversations and empower women.
