In Memory of Andrei Stenin, a Photojournalist Committed to Documenting the Truth

The renowned Andrei Stenin International Photo Contest Exhibition will, for the first time, be showcased at the Good Hope Gallery in the historic Castle of Good Hope.

Hosted by Independent Media and African News Agency (ANA) in close collaboration with Sputnik News Agency and Radio, the Andrei Stenin Exhibition is recognised as one of the world’s top 10 photojournalism showcases, bringing a fresh and exciting collection of powerful visual storytelling. Each year, the Photo Contest attracts the world’s most compelling photographic talent, capturing stories that define our times—from moments of struggle and triumph to deeply moving human-interest narratives.

The exhibition celebrates the work of emerging photographers from around the globe, recognizing their talent and dedication to capturing compelling moments through the lens. This year’s exhibition features a selection of winning images from over 200 countries, including Syria, Italy, Russia, South Africa, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar and China, showcasing diverse cultures, landscapes, and human experiences.

Having previously partnered with Sputnik News Agency and Radio for past editions of the exhibition, Independent Media has played an instrumental role in bringing this powerful showcase of global photojournalism to South African audiences.

The Photo Contest was created in memory of Andrei Stenin, a photojournalist whose commitment to documenting the truth continues to inspire photographers worldwide.

Calvyn Gilfellan, CEO of the Castle Control Board said hosting the Andrei Stennin photographic competition winners in South Africa’s oldest colonial building was more than an honour. “It is an integral part of the work we do to decolonise the programmes, exhibitions, and collections of this former bastion of armed colonial conquest, slavery and apartheid.”
“The Castle of Good Hope witnessed over 350 years of change and turbulance: the current trajectory towards a multi-polar world order perhaps one of the most significant ones in the last millennium. We want to embrace and harness this change towards a better Africa and a better world for all of humanity,” Gilfellan said.

The exhibition at the Good Hope Gallery at the Castle of Good Hope, will be open to the public from 12-16 March. CEO Calvyn Gilfellan hopes that the exhibition will be extended until the end of March – Human Rights Month.
